The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), formerly Chennai Corporation, is the issuing authority for births within Greater Chennai. GCC covers 15 zones across 200 wards. Portal: chennaicorporation.gov.in. Tamil Nadu state also operates a unified portal at tnreginet.gov.in for birth and death registrations statewide. For areas just outside Chennai (Tambaram, Avadi, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur), separate Municipal Corporations or Municipalities are the authority.

Kolkata has historical records going back to British era (Bombay Presidency / Bengal Presidency era), some of which are with the West Bengal State Archives, not KMC.
