Birth Certificate Apostille for Germany and Schengen Countries

Birth Certificate Apostille for Germany and Schengen Countries

For NRIs in Germany — Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf — or other Schengen countries, the Indian birth certificate apostille process is standardised under the Hague Convention. This guide explains German-specific requirements including the certified German translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung).

Does Germany accept MEA-apostilled Indian birth certificate?

Yes. Germany is a Hague Apostille Convention member. MEA-apostilled Indian birth certificates are accepted by all German authorities — Ausländerbehörde (foreigners office), Standesamt (registry office), employers, universities, schools — without further attestation. However, Germany requires a certified German translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung) for documents not in German.

What is beglaubigte Übersetzung and how do I get it?

Beglaubigte Übersetzung is a "certified translation" by a translator officially sworn (vereidigt) before a German court. The translator stamps and signs the translation, certifying it as a true and accurate rendering. Two options:
(1) Translate in Germany: Find a vereidigter Übersetzer (sworn translator) in Germany for Hindi/English to German. Cost: typically EUR 30-80 per page. This is the most reliable for German authorities.
(2) Translate in India: Through a German-language translator in India whose translation is apostilled by MEA along with the original certificate. Some German authorities accept this, others insist on Germany-based translation. For high-stakes uses (residence permit, marriage registration), Germany-based translation is recommended.

Where are German birth certificate needs most common?

For NRIs in Germany: Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit) — Niederlassungserlaubnis, EU Blue Card; Familiennachzug (family reunion) — bringing spouse and children; Eheschließung (marriage registration) in German Standesamt; Anmeldung (residence registration) at local Bürgeramt; Children's school enrollment; University admissions (Studienkolleg, Anerkennung of foreign qualifications); Banking and Krankenversicherung (health insurance).

Does the German Embassy in Delhi require translation before issuing visa?

Yes. For German visa applications filed at the German Embassy in Delhi or Consulates in Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai — particularly long-stay D-visas for residence — the birth certificate must be both apostilled AND have a certified German translation. The translation is checked at the visa application stage.

Which other Schengen countries does this guide apply to?

The same general approach (MEA apostille + certified translation in the destination language) applies to most Schengen and EU countries: France — Traduction assermentée (sworn translation) by a French traducteur assermenté; Italy — Traduzione asseverata or giurata by an Italian sworn translator; Spain — Traducción jurada by a Spanish sworn translator; Netherlands — Beëdigde vertaling by a Dutch sworn translator; Austria — Beglaubigte Übersetzung (similar to Germany); Switzerland — Beglaubigte Übersetzung (German) or other language depending on canton. The MEA apostille on the Indian original is the same for all these countries; only the translation requirements differ.

What's the timeline for Germany-bound birth certificate?

Typical timeline: Indian birth certificate issuance 7-21 days; MEA apostille 7-10 days; German translation (in India) 5-10 days; German translation (in Germany after document arrives) 5-15 days additional; international courier 4-5 days. Total: 3-6 weeks for Indian-side processing, plus translation in Germany if needed.

Does the EU Open Document Regulation help?

The EU Public Documents Regulation (EU 2016/1191), in force since February 2019, simplifies some public document exchange between EU member states — but it applies only to documents between EU countries, not to Indian documents being used in the EU. So Indian birth certificates still require MEA apostille for EU use.
