Bachelorhood Certificate vs Single Status Certificate vs CENOMAR: Key Differences Explained

Bachelorhood Certificate vs Single Status Certificate vs CENOMAR: Key Differences Explained

When an Indian or NRI plans to marry abroad, they quickly encounter a confusing mix of document names — bachelorhood certificate, single status certificate, CENOMAR, CNI, sworn affidavit, certificate of freedom to marry. These names all refer to documents that prove an applicant is currently unmarried, but they originate in different jurisdictions and serve specific procedural roles.

This guide clarifies the differences, explains which country accepts which document, and tells you exactly which one you need based on your marriage destination.

Quick Comparison

Five major variants exist in international practice:

Bachelorhood Certificate — Indian terminology, used domestically and accepted internationally with apostille.

Single Status Certificate — generic international term; functionally identical to the bachelorhood certificate.

CENOMAR — Philippines-specific document issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) — UK, Australia, and Commonwealth-country terminology.

Sworn Affidavit of Single Status — American format, where the applicant swears single status before a notary.

Bachelorhood Certificate — The Indian Format

The bachelorhood certificate is the standard Indian document. It originates as a sworn affidavit, is attested by a notary, then by an SDM, then by the state Home Department, and finally apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs. For non-Hague Convention countries, embassy attestation replaces apostille.

This document is accepted in over 120 countries that are signatories to the Hague Apostille Convention. For Indian-origin couples marrying abroad, it is almost always the document that satisfies the destination country's single-status proof requirement, sometimes accompanied by a sworn translation.

Single Status Certificate — International Usage

Single status certificate is a generic English term used in international correspondence. When a foreign authority asks for a single status certificate, they generally mean a document equivalent to the Indian bachelorhood certificate. The two terms are interchangeable in 95 percent of contexts.

CENOMAR — Philippines-Specific

CENOMAR (Certificate of No Marriage Record) is issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority. It confirms there is no record of marriage in the Philippines for the applicant. Indian citizens marrying in or to a Filipino spouse may encounter this term. The Indian equivalent for an Indian citizen is the bachelorhood certificate — Indian authorities cannot issue a CENOMAR.

Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) — UK and Australian Format

The CNI is issued by the destination country's registrar (UK General Register Office, Australian state registrars). It confirms there is no legal impediment to the marriage. When an Indian or NRI marries in the UK or Australia, the foreign authority asks them to produce an equivalent from India — which is the apostilled bachelorhood certificate. The CNI itself is for British or Australian citizens to produce when marrying abroad.

Sworn Affidavit of Single Status — American Format

In the US, many states accept a sworn affidavit of single status, drafted and signed before a US notary, as proof of single status. For Indian-origin applicants, this affidavit is sometimes accepted on its own, but for K-1 fiancé visas and certain state marriage licenses, the Indian bachelorhood certificate (apostilled) is required as supporting evidence.

Which Document Does Each Country Accept?

As a general rule:

United States — sworn affidavit often suffices; for K-1 visa, also requires Indian apostilled bachelorhood certificate.

United Kingdom — accepts apostilled bachelorhood certificate as equivalent to CNI.

Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands — strict on documentation; apostilled bachelorhood certificate plus sworn translation.

UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong — apostilled bachelorhood certificate, sometimes with additional MoFA attestation.

Australia, New Zealand, Canada — apostilled bachelorhood certificate, with statutory declaration sometimes also accepted.

How Indian NRIs Should Choose

For practical purposes, NRIs only ever need one document — the Indian bachelorhood certificate with MEA apostille (and, where applicable, sworn translation). This single document, properly prepared, is accepted by every major destination country. The other names (CNI, CENOMAR, sworn affidavit) are formats issued by other countries; they are not alternatives that an Indian applicant should pursue.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is CENOMAR the same as bachelorhood certificate?

Functionally yes — both prove unmarried status. CENOMAR is a Philippines-specific document issued by the PSA. The Indian bachelorhood certificate is the equivalent for marriages involving Indian citizens.

2. Does the US accept Indian bachelorhood certificates?

Yes, with apostille from MEA. US authorities generally accept a notarized and apostilled Indian single status affidavit, though specific state requirements may vary. K-1 visas typically require this document.

3. Which countries require CNI instead of bachelorhood certificate?

UK, Australia, and many Commonwealth countries traditionally use CNI language. Indian-issued bachelorhood certificates with MEA apostille are widely accepted as equivalents in these jurisdictions.

4. Can I get a CENOMAR from India?

No. CENOMAR is issued only by the Philippine Statistics Authority. Indian citizens cannot obtain a CENOMAR. The Indian equivalent is the bachelorhood certificate, which is recognized internationally.
