How to obtain Single status certificate in India for NRI living abroad

What is a Single Status Certificate in India?

A Single Status Certificate in India, also known as a Bachelorhood Certificate, Unmarried Certificate, or Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage, is an official document confirming that the applicant is single and eligible to marry. It is required primarily for Indian citizens or NRIs planning to get married in a foreign country where local laws demand proof of marital status.

Why is a Single Status Certificate Required?

  • For NRI marriage registration abroad

  • For immigration purposes

  • To comply with foreign legal requirements

  • As evidence of unmarried status for official use abroad

Countries like the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, UAE, and other European nations often ask for this certificate when processing marriage registrations involving an Indian citizen.

Process to Obtain a Single Status Certificate in India

Step-by-Step Procedure

1️⃣ Draft an Affidavit of Single Status / Bachelorhood
Declare your unmarried status with personal details such as name, father’s name, passport number, address, etc.

2️⃣ Attestation by SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate)
Get the affidavit attested by the SDM in India with jurisdiction over your residential address. This is often referred to as the Single stats certificate stampted by SDM.

3️⃣ Attestation by Home Department
The State Home Department verifies and attests the SDM-issued certificate.

4️⃣ MEA Apostille / Attestation
Finally, the document is submitted to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India for apostille (for Hague Convention countries) or attestation (for others).
