Justice Prevails: An NRI's Integrity Leads to Action Against Corruption in the Tax System
An NRI, Mr. Rajesh Kumar, who resides in the United States, has substantial investments and properties in India. During a routine tax filing, he received a notice from the Indian Income Tax Department regarding discrepancies in his tax returns. Upon approaching the tax officer, he was demanded a bribe to "resolve" the discrepancies quickly. The officer also suggested that Mr. Kumar should engage in unlawful activities, such as falsifying documents, to minimize his tax liability. Mr. Kumar was stressed and concerned about the potential legal implications and the harassment by the officer.
With the involvement of the government of India, action was taken against the officer and his concerns were addressed. If the situation had escalated further, Mr. Kumar could have filed a complaint against public authorities or raised grievances of public authorities. In cases like this, individuals may also consider filing an Indian public authorities complaint or seeking the strengthening of machinery for redressal of public grievance through the Directorate of Public Grievances. Moreover, the use of RTI Matters could have helped Mr. Kumar gain transparency in the process.
