Conditions for Passport Renewal in Canada for US Green Card Holders

  • Typically, passport renewal applications are accepted only if there is proof of a medical exigency preventing the applicant from travelling back to the USA.
  • In such cases, a short-validity passport (valid for 6 months) may be issued.
  • NRI passport renewal in India is another option for Green Card holders who can’t renew their passports in Canada. However, the short-validity passport will not be extended without a valid Canadian permit, and the applicant will need to travel back to the USA or may be issued an Emergency Certificate (EC) to travel to India.
