What Are The Major Components Of Succession Certificate?

Key Components of a Succession Certificate for NRIs

A succession certificate is a critical document for NRIs and OCI holders to inherit the assets of a deceased person. Below are its key components:

1. Details of the Deceased

Includes the name, date of death, and address of the deceased to identify the person whose assets are being claimed.

2. Legal Heir Details

Lists the names and relationships of the legal heirs to establish their right to inheritance.

3. Asset Inventory

Provides a list of movable assets like bank accounts, securities, and debts to ensure proper distribution.

4. Authority to Manage Assets

Grants legal heirs the right to collect and manage the deceased’s movable assets.

5. Declaration of Intestate Death

Confirms the absence of a will, making the succession certificate necessary.

6. Required Documents

  • Death certificate of the deceased.
  • Proof of relationship and ID/address proof of the legal heirs.
  • NOC from other heirs, if applicable.
  • Court fee based on asset value.

Why is a Succession Certificate Important?

  • Required to inherit movable assets such as bank accounts, shares, and fixed deposits.
  • Needed to settle debts or liabilities of the deceased.
  • Avoids inheritance disputes and ensures smooth asset transfer.
