How to Get Apostille and format for Single Status Certificate?

How to Get Apostille for Single Status Certificate

Here’s a 4-step process to get your Single Status Certificate apostilled:

  1. Prepare the Affidavit
Draft the affidavit of single status and get it notarized.

  2. Attestation by SDM or Home Department
Get the document attested either by the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) or State Home Department.

  3. Apostille by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)
The MEA adds an apostille stamp for Hague Convention countries.

  4. Embassy Attestation (if required)
For non-Hague countries (e.g., UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia), embassy attestation is also needed.

Where Can You Get the Single Status Affidavit?

You can obtain or prepare the affidavit through:

  • Government offices (registrar/civil registry)

  • Notary public

  • Indian embassies or consulates

  • Legal professionals or online affidavit service providers

  • Apostille service agencies like India for NRI

Why Apostille Is Necessary?

Some foreign authorities do not accept self-certified documents. Apostille by MEA verifies the authenticity of your affidavit, making it legally valid abroad — saving time on cross-verification and ensuring smooth approval.

Format of a Single Status Affidavit

Although no fixed format exists, your affidavit should include:

  • Full name, birthdate, and passport number

  • Declaration of being unmarried

  • Parental confirmation of marital status

  • Present address

  • Signature of deponent and notary

  • Date and place of affidavit execution

Validity of Apostilled Single Status Certificate

Generally, the apostille is valid for 6 months. However, some countries may accept older documents depending on their local rules. Always check with the local marriage registrar or embassy of the destination country.

Cost of Apostille for Unmarried Certificate

The total cost depends on:

  • Type of attestation authority (Home Dept./SDM)

  • Number of documents

  • Country of use

  • Embassy fees (if applicable)

For accurate pricing, it's best to consult an apostille service provider.

Processing Time

Usually, it takes 10 to 12 working days to complete the process, depending on the issuing authority and location. Reliable agencies can help expedite the process.
