In the case where mortal remains are to be brought back to India
You can report the death to India for NRI services, which can assist in repatriating the deceased's remains to India with help from the Ministry of External Affairs and the local embassy. If required, you can obtain a death certificate online or through the local municipal authority.
A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Indian embassy abroad is required. The death must be reported to the embassy, along with a local death certificate. The embassy will attest the documents and cancel the passport before issuing the NOC. In the case of NRI marriages, the documents to prove family relationships may be necessary, especially when requesting a copy of death certificate.
In India, the local municipal office must be informed, and a death certificate can be obtained from the local municipality. If you need to obtain a death certificate, the death certificate online process might be an option depending on the municipality’s services.
In case the deceased is cremated abroad, intimation of death along with the original death certificate, certificate from the cremation agency, passport copy of deceased and kin, and NOC from kin are to be submitted to the local embassy. If you're seeking a copy of death certificate, this documentation will be necessary. Additionally, the embassy will require confirmation of the Cremation or burial process.
Once the embassy officials are satisfied, NOC can be issued and the passport of the deceased is canceled.
